What is Medical Tourism?Medical tourism is the industry that emerged as people from all around the world travel to other countries to obtain health-care services such as check-ups and medical, dental, or surgical procedures; while taking the opportunity to go on a relaxing vacation and experience the attractions and culture of the country that they are visiting.The idea of people traveling from one place to another to seek medical services is nothing new. This is true especially when the medical procedure they require is unavailable in their hometown. People go to bigger cities that have better equipped health care facilities. Others even go overseas for their medical needs. It didn't matter if attending to their medical needs would cost them a large sum because people put more value on one's own health. Today, people are more budget conscious when spending for their health. Health insurance coverage has become an issue, especially in the US where the number of uninsured citizens increased from 44.8 million in 2005, to 47 million in 2006 (U.S. Census Bureau, 2006). 80 million citizens rely on government health programs, 177 million are on employment based insurance, while only 27 million pay for their personal health insurance. Some are forced to be on wait lists before receiving medical care, while others whose medical services needs are not covered by their insurance cannot undergo operation due to budget constraints. Because of the advancements in transportation, the medical tourism industry emerged. Any medical service or procedure is available and affordable, but in another country. It is easier now to travel from one country to another to avail of overseas medical services. People just need to be willing to travel to receive medical care at a more affordable rate. The cash amount saved is tremendous, that even with travel expenses, they would still have money left in their bank accounts compared to having the procedure done in their home country. Cheaper does not necessarily equate to lower quality. Due to the economic gap between developed and developing countries, it is cheaper to have medical procedures done in countries such as the Philippines, India, Thailand, Costa Rica, or Turkey because of lower labor fees, hospital fees, and other overhead expenses. Still, quality remains the same as proven by health care quality certifications from the proper accrediting bodies.
